Seven-year-old Anthony Cartwright watched in horror as a tiger tore at his father, nearly killing him. That tiger saved Anthony and his mother from a brutal beating at the hands of his drunk father. Anthony had named it Lenny when his mother gave it to him years earlier. Lenny was his stuffed toy and his constant companion. Young Anthony could not understand how a toy animal came alive and defended him.

Years later, Anthony is a cop patrolling the streets of New York City with his partner Angelo Ricardi, when they come face to face with three hoodlums. Anthony is shot in the chest, and as Angelo tries to pull him behind a dumpster for cover, he hears a deep growl. He peers around the dumpster and sees one of the hoods lying on the ground and the other two running for their lives.

It quickly becomes apparent that Anthony has the uncanny ability to conjure up a beast and turn it into a killer. He cannot explain how he came by this incredible ability but he accepts it and decides to use it to help those who are most vulbnerable, But it is a two-edged sword. Lenny is now standing between Anthony and the woman he loves.

He engages the help of a psychiatrist to delve into his psyche to find a solution. If one is not found, he is doomed to a life of loneliness with a vicious killer as a constant partner.
