Amy walked into the classroom. She carried her red backpack on her back as the teacher told the classroom to line up for recess.
Amy was happy that it was time to play. Her sight words had been hard today and some time playing on the swings would be very fun.
Katie and Jake skipped out the door before Miss Clark said it was time to go. Miss Clark told them to slow down and walk outside. She told her class to follow the rules.
They could fall down and get hurt if they ran. No one wanted to fall down and get hurt, and so they walked the rest of the way until they were outside.
It was not long before the children started playing. Amy and Kelly jumped rope. Harry and James played ball. Everyone laughed and played together, but stopped playing when the door opened.
"Children, this is Jade. She is from the Mars Colony. Please be nice to her. It's hard being new after all. Remember what it was like your first day of school. Amy will you show Jade where the lunchroom is when recess is over?"
"Yes Miss Clark." Amy said. She smiled and walked up to the new girl.
Jade was an alien. Her skin was green. The color of limes. Some of the other children stared at her as she walked onto the playground towards Amy.
They introduced themselves, just as the bell rang. It was time to go back inside.
When it was time to work on their math assignments, Harry and James whispered and laughed about Jade.
They said mean things about Jade. They made fun of her green skin and her green clothes.
This made Jade very sad, and Jade began to cry. Jade got up and began to run to the bathroom.
Jade closed the door and sat on the floor.
She was quiet as the teacher knocked on the door.
Miss Clark told the class to sit and read their picture book, and went to the bathroom to see if Jade was ok.
Miss Clark knocked on the door three times.
“Go away. I am never coming out ever.” Jade said to Miss Clark.
“Jade, Amy is asking about you. So is Megan and Dana. And if you don’t come out, you will miss
art. Your mother said art was your favorite class on Mars.”
When Miss Clark said it was time for art, Jade stood up. She washed her face, and walked out into the hallway.
Miss Clark and Jade walked down to the classroom, and Jade sat down in her seat.
“Boys and girls, we are having art time. Today in art I would like you to draw what you think Mars looks like on the outside, or on the inside.”
The girls and boys took their crayons from their desks, and their papers, and they drew pictures.
Amy drew a large green planet with spots on it. She thought Mars must look like that.
Megan drew two little girls that looked like Jade looked. They were playing jump rope.
Harry drew a picture of Jade with Amy. He covered the picture when Miss Clark walked by.
“What is it, Harry? Can I see? It’s ok. I won’t laugh, or get angry. I promise.” Miss Clark said.
She picked up the picture. The green little girl had the name Jade written on it, and the blonde girl had the name Amy written on it.
Miss Clark smiled. “Why did you draw your picture like this? Can you tell the class?”
