When Alison Thompson becomes Chair of Governors at her sons’ school six months into her first curacy, she knows it’s a lot to take on. She’s in a busy parish, newly separated from her husband, and the school is about to undergo an inspection. But Alison likes a challenge, and the Inspector in charge, Iain Sutherland, seems surprisingly pleasant - even asking to meet her once the inspection is over. Then her vicar becomes ill, leaving Alison to run the parish alone. As the conflicting demands of church, school, and family threaten to overwhelm her, she becomes increasingly reliant on Iain, and they become lovers. When her parishioners eventually learn of the affair, Alison is faced not only with the consequences of her own fall from grace, but with some devastating truths about the Inspector’s behaviour.

Originally published in 2000, and following on from the award-winning Messiahs Don't Fly, An Inspector Falls is a dramatic page-turner. You'll feel the tension as Borrowdale's perceptively-drawn characters head towards a disastrous showdown.
