Stella Cracken is an artist living in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. The painterly world she inhabits abruptly changes when her mother dies. Frances was a private person but Stella is unprepared for what she finds when she starts to deal with her mother's will and her effects. As a young widowed mother, Frances left Scotland for a new life and never spoke about the one she left behind. Stella inherits more than she knew about and comes to realise the legacy is shrouded in secrecy and lies. In Scotland, and searching for the truth, Stella meets her only living relative, the tight-lipped Nell. She cannot, or will not say anything about a series of defining events that happened nearly forty years previously, events that changed the lives of all those involved forever. A family photograph album comes into Stella's possession but it only deepens the mystery. She has to rely on her own intuitive nature, to trust in fragments of deeply hidden memory and the silent guidance of two shadowy figures from the past.
