When her husband, Ken, is devastated by a traumatic brain injury, Barbara is thrust into the role of caregiver and must confront the fear that he will never again be the vibrant, intelligent man he was. As his advocate and protector, she finds a fierce resolve she did not know she possessed. Yet the unrelenting tension and chaos take their toll. She is diagnosed with secondary traumatic stress, common among family caregivers who devote themselves to a loved one's care while not caring well enough for themselves. Ken fights to regain his memory and other lost abilities while Barbara finds sanctuary in her journal and writes daily about what is happening to them. Married only nine months at the time of the accident, she vows they will find a way to recover together and continue their life. Yet making that a reality is more difficult than anything she had ever imagined.
