Cesar Brion was a heavyweight from Cordoba, Argentina, a former worker in the diplomatic office. He came to the United States, like many other young prospects, hoping to have a shot at meeting the winner of the Ezzard Charles-Jersey Joe Walcott 1949 fight. There were others who came from Europe and have been called Young Lions by one sportswriter. Rocky Marciano was considered one of the young hopefuls also. He first fought at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of the Roland LaStarza-Cesar Brion bout in 1949. Brion was excellent as a defensive fighter and could take some heavy punishment dished out by great fighters like Joe Louis and Ezzard Charles. Louis fought Brion twice, first in Chicago and then in San Francisco. For much of the fight in SF's Cow Palace Joe and Cesar went toe to toe in the ring. Louis said afterward that it was as hard a 10 round fight as he had ever been in.
