This novel begins with Russell Stonechild on his back in the British Military Hospital in Haifa, Palestine.  He has just experienced the traumatic burial of 800 slaughtered English troops in the remotest depths of the Egyptian Desert.  The burial is followed by a 400 mile journey, alone, across barren desert seeking rescue for a wounded comrade.  He loses his transport and makes the final one hundred miles on foot, with little food or water, and pursued by vengeful men whose oasis village has been ravaged by fleeing British forces.  As a last stretch of nerves he flies to Cairo for a debriefing session with General Auchinlech, newly assigned to command the British 8th Army in Egypt.

In Haifa he renews contact with Avram Akavia, an acquaintance from the Ethiopian campaign, now a major in a spy-training centre.  More used to direct confrontation than intrigue he is nevertheless forced into the latter.
