There are nine fruits of the spirit we need to learn how to use, to be more like Jesus in our everyday lives. It is difficult and something we have to work on everyday.

A doctor, an engineer, and an attorney were arguing over whose profession was the oldest.  The doctor said, the medical profession was first.  The Bible says God created Eve from Adam's rib that is surgical procedure."  The engineer said, "Before that, God created the world out of chaos, and one must be an engineer to create a world."  "But wait," said the lawyer, "where do you think chaos came from?"

Lawyers create much chaos. Their profession involves broken laws, and broken lives.  Lawlessness is their bread and butter.  One lawyer had a bumper sticker that read, "PLEASE HIT ME, I'M A LAWYER." Judge Harry Shafer said, “We have fifty million laws trying to enforce the Ten Commandments." The law is so complex.

We need to have laws against many human actions, because people are offensive and harmful to other people and their property.  In Galatians 5, Paul lists fifteen acts of the sinful nature of man in verses 19-21.

In verses 22-23 he then lists the nine fruits of the Spirit. In verse 23 he said, "Against such things there is no law."  Laws are to restrain people from harmful behavior and there is no harmful behavior associated with the fruits of the spirit.

Of all the laws around the world you will not find a single law against the fruits of the spirit. The fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It is not true that everything good is illegal or fattening. None of these nine fruits will add a pound to your body, or any guilt to your conscience.

Unlike acts of the flesh, acts related to the fruits of the spirit do no harm to anyone. These acts and attitudes do not hurt people in any way.  They help and heal, and they add beauty and pleasure to all relationships. These fruits are a preview of heaven, and the goal in this life is to become a garden where they grow everywhere.
