The book describes one man's efforts in trouble-torn Pakistan and Afghanistan. It describes how he changed from a mountaineer and became a social worker. He started building schools for children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. When Mortenson started his humanitarian efforts, he co-founded the Central Asia Institute. It was a non-profit institution. The schools built by CAI provide education to more than 64,000 children, which include 54,000 girls. Before that there were few educational opportunities for the girls in the remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
