As the time passed, the play subsequently began to gain recognition as a classic of realism. With the passage of time, it became one of the most important plays in the nineteenth century theatre, and world drama.

Hedda is the titular character. Her role is considered to be one of the greatest dramatic roles in the world of theatre. Different scholars have reviewed Hedda’s character from several different angles.

One being asked, Henrik Ibsen said that his intention in giving Hedda Gabler name was to indicate that Hedda as a personality to be regarded rather as her father’s daughter than her husband’s wife. The playwright intended to establish Hedda Gabler as an independent identity and emphatic person.
