When their father goes off to war and their mother falls ill, Sarah and Lily are left to their own devices. Playing in their yard, the girls are amazed to find real-life fairies at a miniature marketplace under some bushes. But when Lily suddenly disappears with the fairies, Sarah must follow her into the fairys magical world. There, Sarah and Lily learn that a young fairy prince has been kidnapped by an evil elf witch. To rescue the fairy child, the children set out on a fabulous quest that places them in the middle of a war against the witch and her army of goblins. Along the way, they find some allies, fight many dangers, and learn self-reliance and friendship. Written by a deployed U.S. soldier for his children, the story demonstrates the strength of will of family members left behind.
