The Queen’s Butterflies is set in Diaea, a country where the Queen is secretly her King’s spymaster and a vast network of female spies keeps the country safe and peaceful. This story follows the lives of three girls, born on the same day but in very different worlds: Gretchen, the daughter of a soldier-turned-farmer who longs to fight as he did, Mara, sold by her mother as a babe to a trader of flesh, and Liza, the tomboy daughter of a country merchant who fights her mother’s efforts to turn her into a suitable bride. As the three girls are chosen and trained to join the Butterflies, the world changes around them. The Diaean royal children fall in love and prepare for their futures. A young woman is reunited with her first love only after she has married another. Overshadowing all is a neighboring King, claiming the throne after his father dies suspiciously, who invades Diaea and thrusts a peaceful world into violence. It then falls to the Butterflies and their students to reveal traitors and find a way to win the war.
