George Webbe Dasent (1817-1896) was a folklorist and translator of legends and fairy-tales into English. Dasent was acquainted with Jacob Grimm who advised him to study mythology. Eventually George Dasent became a professor of English literature.

The beginning of this fairy-tale may remind our readers of many other similar stories: the two step-sisters who have to live together and don’t like each other. One day they go out to the well to spin there and decide to have a competition: the loser will go down the well. So one of the sisters loses and goes down… to find a beautiful world of magic!
